Less than 2% of kelp forests are effectively protected. We need to protect at
least 30% of kelp forests ecosystems by 2030 to safeguard marine

biodiversity and food security

PROTECTING KELP FOREST

Dr. Nur Arafeh Dalmau

Founder and director of MasKelp.

Dr. Carolina Olguin Jacobson

Founder and outreach management of MasKelp.

Dr. Fiorenza Micheli

Underwater kelp monitoring advisor of MasKelp.

Dr. Kyle Cavanaugh

Kelp mapping advisor of MasKelp.

Dr. Adrian Munguia Vega

Environmental DNA advisor for MasKelp.

BSc. Jessica Anayansi García

Ambassador of MasKelp in Mexico.

Carolina Pantano

Ambassador of MasKelp in Argentina.

Founder and director. Nur is an oceanographer, with expertise in climate change adaptation and conservation planning. Passionate about kelp forests and marine protected areas. His goal is to ensure kelp forests are recognized in

international and national policies as a priority ecosystem for biodiversity conservation. He works to identify climate refugia for kelp forests to tell future generations how we recovered and safeguarded kelp forests around the world.

Co-founder and outreach management. Caro is a marine ecologist, jellyfish expert and kelp forest certified diver. Passionate about the ocean and all animals living in it, with broad laboratory and field experience.

She works to understand the impact of climate change and COVID19 in small scale fisheries. Her aim is to share inspiring stories and knowledge about kelp forests.

Climate refugia for kelp forests

In this project, we map climate refuges for kelp forests in Mexico and Argentina. Protection of these kelp refugees is a cost-effective approach to enhance the recovery of kelp forests from climatic events and human activities. We are working with scientists, NGOs, and fishing communities in Mexico to co-develop a framework for identifying and managing these places

Expanding kelp forest protection:

This project promotes establishing, expanding, and managing marine protected areas in Latin America. We support local communities in establishing fishing refuges in Mexico and practitioners in Argentina in assessing the current protection of kelp forests.

Kelp forests monitoring

This project aims to create standardized underwater kelp forest surveys in Latin America. We have been monitoring kelp forests in Mexico in the past decade and will soon begin working with other countries.

Kelp Mappers in Spanish

First gathering and workshop in Spanish that aims to transfer knowledge on kelp forest mapping and monitoring. In this event, MasKelp will work with an international team of experts from Mexico, Chile, and Argentina to train the next generation of kelp scientists in Latin America.

Global kelp forests protection:

MasKelp is leading a team of over 20 international scientists who are integrating the first global remote-sensing maps of floating kelp forests and quantifying their protection inside marine protected areas and the threats they face to marine heatwaves.
